The workshop's window bay holds its cargo under an old tarpaulin, and the tarpaulin is not good at secrets. Morning light through the frosted glass throws the shapes beneath into soft relief: long ridges and rounded shoulders, a tall upright with a belly to it, a perfect circle the size of a wagon wheel. By noon the barber is offering odds on the spelling. The constable, to his credit, does not kick the door in. He measures the tallest ridge through the glass with a practiced eye: four feet, give or take, which happens to be the height of the Bijou's B, a figure printed in the anniversary program. He writes it down, closes his notebook, and goes to find Pearl Hays, because some warrants are better served as questions between old friends.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words colour themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue.The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
