Nick Riva, tired of the staring, walks into the box office and lays his cards on the counter: a business license, a hotel receipt, and a typed letter on the city owners' stationery inviting him to bid on eight hundred auditorium seats, upholstery and hardware, removal after this season. He is a dealer in architectural salvage, he says, not a thief of landmarks, and he would like to eat one meal without the waitress counting his fingers. Faye reads the letter twice, and the temperature of the case changes. The marquee letters were taken by somebody who loves this place, she says quietly. But this, she taps the stationery, is the owners selling the seats out from under a gala they demanded. The roof mystery is a kindness of some kind. The scandal was always going to come by mail.
