The judging tent smells of coffee and cut grass, the way it has every September for forty years. The pies come in two by two, the entry cards go up, and at the head table the famous Mabry tin stands with its lid off. The committee crowds around it like a well. Inside there is no recipe, no folded paper at all, only a fine white dust of flour, and the flour is fresh. Whoever opened this tin had been baking that very morning. Edith Mabry looks at her empty tin for a long moment, then folds her hands and asks everyone to please sit down. Four ribbons came out of that tin. A champion has a right to shout, and the fact that she does not is the strangest thing in the tent.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words colour themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue.The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
