Walt Pierce runs the cake stand the way some men run a railroad. Layer cakes under glass domes, frosting piped to the millimeter, a register that rings like a church bell. Thirty feet from Edith's tent, close enough to smell her crust, which is how both of them have liked it for decades. Pinned above the register, faded nearly white, hangs a blue ribbon. Not one of Walt's. It is Edith's first, from the year the fair moved to the county grounds. Asked how he came to have it, Walt gets busy with a cake box. She gave it to me, he says finally, and the year she gave it is his business and hers. A man does not display a rival's prize. A man displays a treasure.

How a mystery chapter works
