Ruth Alvarez runs the prize committee with a clipboard and runs the fundraising cookbook with a red pencil. The proofs came back from the printer yesterday, and they sit on her folding desk in a neat stack, margins full of her corrections. Page forty one stops the room cold. There, typeset and proofed, sits the champion pie recipe, measures and method and all, in a book that went to the printer a week before the tin was ever opened. Who gave it to you, the committee asks, and Ruth squares the stack and does not answer. Ask her about deadlines, or about the school roof the funds will fix, and she will talk until the fair closes. Ask her where page forty one came from, and the chairwoman becomes a wall.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words colour themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue.The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
