Gus was tuning by the gate at first light, the hour he likes best, when the strings ring clear in the cold and nobody asks for requests. Across the field he saw the tent flap move and a figure come out, unhurried, hands deep in the pockets of a baker's apron, the ties done twice around the waist the way the old kitchens do it. The figure did not look around and did not hurry, and it was gone past the sheds before his tune was through. Pressed for more, Gus allows two things. The figure was a good head too small to be Walt Pierce. And it walked, he says carefully, like somebody who belonged exactly where they were. Then he lifts the fiddle and declines to say another word with his mouth full of music.

How a mystery chapter works
