The premium board stands by the tent door, tall as a barn door itself, every entry in every class lettered in white chalk. Preserves, quilts, squash the size of footstools, and under PIES a column of names the county reads like standings. This morning the column is one line short. Second from the top, where a name should be, there is only a clean smudge and a ghost of white on the ledge below. Somebody wiped one entry before the judging, and did it carefully. Marla Quinn stands in front of the board longer than anyone. Her own name is up there, first time in her life, chalk still bright. The smudge sits directly above it, in the champion's spot, and she cannot make herself say what everyone is thinking.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words colour themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue.The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
