The junction sheriff, wired ahead, asks the obvious wire back: would the lady leave willingly without her eyes? Effie Larkin, called to confirm the famous face from supper, looks at the spectacles a long moment through her own. A woman who writes disappearances for a living, she says carefully, knows exactly which detail everyone will trip over. The sheriff's wire had assumed a victim. Effie's tone, though she never says the word, has begun to assume an author.
