Trainmen sleep through everything except the exceptions. In the smoking car, a commercial traveler mentions it to the sheriff almost apologetically: somewhere deep in the night he heard the whistle give two short blasts, the water-stop signal, felt the brakes gather, and was asleep again before the train fully stood. The fireman confirms the code but not the need; the tender, he says, scratching his ear, was topped at the city and near enough full all night. A water stop with no thirst. The sheriff writes it down slowly. Trains stop for water, for signals, for orders. This one stopped for four dark minutes because somebody with the authority to want it wanted it, and the only man aboard with that authority has been very busy all morning at the far end of the train.
