Gilbert Sharp performs his worry in the club car, loudly. Three books she owes me, he tells the sheriff, waving the contract like a subpoena; the firm has printers, a schedule. Pressed on the money he grows vaguer: an advance was paid; some of it is, at present, illiquid. His case, opened under the sheriff's patient eye, holds the contract, cigars, a racing form, and an envelope in a lady's hand he claims not to have noticed. Inside: a bank draft for the full advance, to the penny, dated the day before departure, one line in the famous handwriting. Paid in full, with thanks for the early years. The sheriff looks from the draft to the publisher. It is hard, he observes, to call a lady robbed away by force when she has settled her accounts on the way out.
