Folded into the seat pocket of compartment four, easy to miss and meant to be, is the line's timetable, one entry ringed in green ink: Marlow Bend, arrival five thirty-two, a whistle-stop where the branch line ends. The sheriff has never heard of it. Effie has: the author's book jackets, every one, carry the same line: Miss Voss was born in a railroad town in the hills, and taught herself to read in its station waiting room. Hazel brings the atlas from the observation car: a dot on a dying branch. Milepost ninety, the sheriff notes, checking the map against the log's missing minutes, sits eleven miles by gravel road from Marlow Bend. Her hometown, ringed in green ink, stops looking like a clue somebody dropped, and starts looking like a door somebody left open on purpose.

How a mystery chapter works
