The garden show wakes in glory: the tents white against June, the trestle tables ranked with dahlias and sweet peas, the tea urn already muttering. The founder's permanent trophy gleams above the entry table. Only the rose class is wrong. The list wears line after line of withdrawals, names the class has counted on for years, each offering the same nothing: a change of heart, a poor season, best wishes to all. Edmund Tate, head judge, taps the list with a dry finger and pronounces it improbable. Rose growers, he says, have no changes of heart; they have feuds, funerals and frost, and it has been a mild year. Beside him the chairwoman, Constance Ferris, files the withdrawal cards, unhurried, and says the show will manage. Her hands, Nell Baxter notices, are the only busy thing in the tent.
