Nell Baxter finds hers where the others found theirs, though she does not know that yet: tucked under the twine ball in her trug basket, a plain envelope with no name; whoever left it knew whose basket was whose. Inside, the message: letters snipped from printed pages, pasted in wobbling rows, ordering her out of the rose class, or else the town learns a thing she told exactly one person, years ago, in confidence. The others burned theirs; Nell marches hers to the committee tent and slaps it down like a bad card. I am new here, she announces to the canvas at large, so nobody has taught me to be ashamed properly yet. Somebody is emptying the rose class one secret at a time. I would like to know who. I am entering anyway, and my seedling is good.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words colour themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue.The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
