The constable's man scrapes a sample of the glue and the village chemist, enjoying himself, reports by noon: flour paste, mixed thin, a pinch of alum, spread with something flat, a knife or a ruler. Not a stationer's gum in the county matches it. It is, he says, exactly the recipe in the show's own handbook, the one the committee mixes by the bowlful every June to hang posters and tea-tent signs. Which narrows nothing and everything. Half the village has stirred that bowl at one time or another. But the bowl lives in the committee cupboard, the cupboard lives under the trophy shelf, and the cupboard's little key, as Edmund Tate observes with the reluctance of a man whose logic is walking somewhere he does not want to follow, lives on the ring the chairwoman carries.
