Motive breaks open in the founder's old greenhouse, where the committee stores Franklin Pruett's remaining papers. The tin trunk of his files has been gone through recently: dust disturbed in one clean rectangle, the string retied in a bow he never used. An old inventory lists one item now missing: his private grafting notebook, the one he was buried without because nobody could find it then either. Lila, asked what the notebook held, smiles at the middle distance. Everything, she says. Frank wrote what he actually did, not what he told the judging table. Every cross, every failure, every vanity corrected in pencil. She looks around the greenhouse her husband built. If somebody has that notebook, they know more about the famous rose than I ever asked to. And they think it worth blackmailing a county over.

How a mystery chapter works
