The notebook surfaces where committee things surface: the chairwoman's shelf of show records, wrapped in last year's schedule. Nobody asks how it traveled there. In Franklin's careful hand, the diagrams tell a detective story backwards: a shipment in error, a graft that took, years of growing on. Pressed between the last pages, creased and soil-stained, in a plain wax-paper sleeve: a commercial nursery's original French label, naming a red rose the catalogs sell to anyone. Gideon Plum reads it and sits on a potting stool, which for Gideon is an exclamation. That, he says, is the rose that has beaten this county for forty years. Mislabeled in shipping, recognized by the one man who saw what it could become, never corrected. The famous Pruett red is a French commercial. Grown better than France ever grew it. But bought, not bred.

How a mystery chapter works
