The founder's greenhouse has been locked since the funeral, its keys never leaving the committee: one with the groundsman, surrendered each winter, and one on the chairwoman's ring, beside the cupboard key and the cashbox key and the little brass one for the trophy case. The groundsman's key spent the spring in the estate office drawer; the ledger initialed it in and never initialed it out. Which leaves arithmetic too simple to say kindly. Whoever went through Franklin's trunk entered with a key and took the one notebook they knew to look for. Not theft for money; the silver trowel on the same shelf never moved. Somebody wanted the founder's private truth, and the shortlist of people who could walk into that greenhouse without a soul thinking twice has, when the tent is honest, exactly one name on it.

How a mystery chapter works
