On Sunday morning the Peacock Room smelled of cold smoke. Monty stood behind the bar with a red china marker, marking the whiskey level on every bottle. "Every Sunday, every bottle," he said. "That's how you catch a thief." Sylvie sat at table one with her datebook for 1950. Dec 30: rehearsal, and Archie in a mood all night. Dec 31: scarf on the rail. J. played me a tune out there and wouldn't say what it was. Jan 2: J. to Fort Leonard Wood on the seven o'clock bus. I didn't go. Monty set a cup of coffee by her elbow, with two sugars, the way she took it. "My offer's still good," he said. "The ring is in my desk. You don't have to answer today." She shut the datebook before he could read it.

How a mystery chapter works
