Anyone in Archie's band room could have seen her scarf on that rail. Clem Dawes was the last of them still in Kansas City. That afternoon he was at the piano, rehearsing the band without Kansas City Goodnight. He marked each cut on the charts with a red pencil. By the band room door, last night's spotlight cue sheet still hung on its nail. One line was struck through in red. "You weren't on the bandstand at the interval, Clem." "Nobody plays in an interval. I was right here at the piano, going over charts." He played a run with his left hand. "Who wrote Kansas City Goodnight?" "Archie. Wrote it at his kitchen table the winter Johnny went in the Army." He kept his eyes on the keys. "Saxophones. From the bridge, boys, and this time come in together."
