Johnny had said there were two reasons he came home. On Sunday evening Sylvie went looking for the other one at the Star, where Eddie Yates was typing his column under a green lamp. A photograph on his desk showed Johnny at a microphone in New York. "He sat with me at the bar on Saturday," Eddie said. "Club soda, 8:31. He told me to stay for Kansas City Goodnight. Said I'd want what came before it word for word." "Did he tell you what?" "Not me. He took that to the boss at nine." Eddie pulled the page out of the typewriter. "Your trumpet player is waiting downstairs." Johnny was under the streetlight when she came out. He walked her home. At her door she found her key on the second try, and he came up.
