The paper trail lives in a folder on Mort's desk: the typed setlist in three drafts, and the printed program the tables got. The showpiece began in the first set, safe and early. Draft by draft it slides later, until it anchors the second set, right where the press would be fed and ready to marvel. The note by the change is Mort's blunt hand: after interval, Pruitt seated. Rehearsal that afternoon played the number once, downbeat to last chord, off the piano charts because Lonnie liked to save his lip. The horn was healthy at four and dead at ten. The window is the interval plus the first set, and whoever chose it knew the running order well enough that the sabotage would land on the showpiece alone. Nothing else in the book was touched. This was aimed.

How a mystery chapter works

    Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.

    One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.

    The finale needs every clue.The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
