Every club has its legend; the Blue Room's is the encore. In the great days the last number was never on the program: the lights dropped to a hush, requests came from the floor, the band answered, bows and ovation doubly earned. Regulars still tell the stories: the baton handed to a customer, a nightclub yielding its stage to anyone with standing to claim it. Mort plans the reopening's encore as a museum piece: same hush, same signal, revived for the press. Alma, checking coats, hears two veterans in the corridor and files the exchange. If a man had something to say to this room, one says, that is when he could say it. The other answers that some men have waited ten years for that hush. She does not hear who they mean. She notices neither laughs twice.
