At noon Monty called Sylvie up to his office. The safe stood open, and the weekend's takings were stacked on the blotter. Behind him hung a photograph of the Camp Crowder band in 1944, with a skinny Monty in the second row holding a trumpet. A trumpet case sat on the shelf under it. "I saw Lomax leave your building this morning," he said. "Then you were up early." "Somebody has to be." He squared a stack of fives. "And Saturday, at the interval?" "At the front door the whole time, shaking hands." "Who gets the money from Kansas City Goodnight?" "Winnie cashes the checks. Always has." He shut the safe. "I gave you this job in February, Sylvie. I'd like to think that counts for something." Down in the alley, the beer truck was banging on the door.
