On Monday afternoon Sylvie walked through Saturday's interval again with Eddie Yates and his notebook. "I heard Johnny running scales through the band room door," she said. "The bar clock said 9:42." She walked from that door to Eddie's corner table at the front. It took her fifty seconds. "He sat down here at 9:43," Eddie said. "Smoked two cigarettes into that ashtray and talked about New York." He turned a page. "Said he split his lip on the mouthpiece at rehearsal, and told everyone else he bit it. He meant to play that high note anyway." "Did he leave the table?" "Not once." Eddie tapped the window glass. "I write down everything, Miss Ferrante. Even the cars at the curb." "And Monty, at the front door?" "He was there at 9:43. After that I was watching the street."
