Behind the bandstand runs a short corridor: the cloakroom with its hooks and numbered tokens, the case room opposite, the risers, spare stands, work lamps, the doorman's stool. This is Alma's country. Musicians pass all night, and she can tell you who passed during the interval: coats checked for half, jokes traded with the rest. She recites the traffic like a train timetable, all ordinary: reeds fetching reeds, a spilled drink, Dinah walking off her nerves. One entry sits wrong. A man went into the case room during the first set, when it has no business in it, and came out four minutes later with nothing in his hands. He had a right to be there, she says carefully. He of all people. It is the errandless four minutes she cannot file, and Alma has a place to file everything.

How a mystery chapter works

    Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.

    Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words colour themselves in and cross off the list.
  3. 3
    One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
  4. 4
    The finale needs every clue.The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
