Chapter 9 of 10
At four Sylvie was scraping candle wax off a tablecloth when Winnie Benn and Clem Dawes came in together. Winnie had left the mink at the hotel. "Eddie Yates telephoned us," Winnie said. "We were in Clem's car on Saturday. Since last summer it's been Clem's car or nowhere." "My wife thinks I rehearse late," Clem said. He sat down heavily. "And that pencil sheet was Johnny's. I knew his hand from his music book. Archie paid me two hundred dollars to copy it out clean." "You told me you didn't know the hand." "I know what I told you. I was ashamed of it." Winnie put a hand on his shoulder and left it there. Sylvie looked past them at the band room door. Saturday's cue sheet was still on its nail.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
