On Monday night, an hour before the doors opened, Sylvie climbed to Monty's office with Saturday's spotlight cue sheet. He was at his desk with a red china marker, writing up the liquor order. "Johnny asked you for the microphone," she said. "He was going to say whose song it was. It's your song now, Monty. You bought it from Winnie." "I bought a lot of things from Winnie." "Somebody crossed it off this sheet in china marker before ten to ten. Nobody else knew the horn was dead until five to. The spot boy saw you in the hall." "Clem cuts the numbers." "Clem cuts in pencil." She reached up to the shelf under the Camp Crowder photograph and took down his old trumpet case. Monty half rose from his chair. In the case pocket lay a paper packet with J.L. pencilled on it, and six springs inside. Sylvie pressed the old trumpet's valves. They came up quick and clean. "They're good springs," Monty said. "I couldn't throw good springs in the river." "You could have given them back." "I paid Winnie nine thousand dollars for that song." He sat down again. "And I bought you a ring."
