The reopening's second night, because Mort Fingers refuses to end on a ruin, and the club is fuller than the first: scandal is better advertising than triumph. The band plays carefully around the hole in the book where the showpiece was. Then the house lights drop to the old hush, the encore hush, and before a single request comes up from the floor, a man is already at the piano. Lay your nine clues on the table as he plays: the seized valves, the desk man's resin, the songbook's margins, the pawnshop tag, the aimed setlist, the fire that burned the proof, the encore that hands the stage to anyone with standing, the errandless visit behind the bandstand, and the credit line that turned found into arranged by. Find them in the grid. The letters left over, read left to right, top to bottom, say what the hush was for.
