Chapter 1 of 10

Friday night, grandstand full, the Herons up two in the seventh, and the visiting third baseman lays down a bunt that rolls four feet and sits down like a tired dog. The crowd laughs. The visiting manager does not. It is the fourth Friday running the infield has gone heavy late, and he has kept notes: bunts dying, hoppers sitting down, the running game drowned past the sixth. His protest reads less like anger than arithmetic, dates and innings in columns. Weather, the Herons' front office answers. The reply is one sentence, and it brings the clipboard down from the league: weather is many things, gentlemen, but it is not punctual. Ruthie Vale, keeping score above the dugout, hears of the letter and looks at her own book too long. Punctual is a word she could have used first.

How a mystery chapter works

  1. 1
Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
  2. 2
Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
  3. 3
One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
  4. 4
The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
