The Geography of Slow

Print

Chapter 3 of 10

Mr. Ott borrows a soil probe from the county extension and maps the infield inch by inch. The outfield: firm. The mound: firm, tended, perfect. The clay tells its story in patches: heavy down both basepaths, soft in the bunt lanes, firm as a courtroom everywhere else. Water has been landing on this dirt the way chalk lands on a diagram. He sits in the grandstand with his map and does what the league pays for: thinks like a cheat. Slow basepaths kill the steal. Heavy lanes kill the bunt. Kill those and the running game dies, the visitors' style, and the innings shorten, because slow dirt makes outs cheaper. It is the most disciplined doctoring of his nine years, and the discipline nags: this was not done to win an argument. It is too careful. It is protecting something.

How a mystery chapter works

  1. 1
Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
  2. 2
Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
  3. 3
One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
  4. 4
The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
