The Scouting Report

Print

Chapter 4 of 10

The visiting scout is not hiding, scouts never do: panama hat, program, a notebook. Skip Harmon sends coffee out of courtesy and sits down out of curiosity, and the two talk as rivals do, in true sentences arranged to mislead. The scout's report says what they all say: pitching thin after the Arm, power modest, defense honest. Beat them with speed. Run early, bunt often. Except, the scout says, nobody can. Not here. Every club arrives with that plan and leaves with the same soggy page of dead bunts and strangled steals, only here, only late. A card laid face up, to see what the other face does. Skip's face does nothing, because Skip knows nothing. Ruthie, two rows up, feels the second piece click against the first: the ground is answering the scouting reports. Somebody read them too.

How a mystery chapter works

  1. 1
Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
  2. 2
Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
  3. 3
One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
  4. 4
The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
