The Innocent Bench

Print

Chapter 7 of 10

Ott interviews the dugout in the tunnel, clipboard on knee, and comes away with the strangest finding: real innocence. The catcher thinks the dirt is bad luck. The shortstop blames the river fog. Skip Harmon goes white, then red, then quiet, and says if someone on my payroll is cheating for me I will fire them before you finish your report. He means it, and fears it. He believes them all, and holds a shape he has never held. Grounds doctoring is a team crime: bench orders, shed executes, everyone denies in matching sentences. This is the opposite: a bench that knows nothing, a shed that says nothing, matching nobody. This is one man's project, for reasons no protest card imagines. He writes in the margin, where his findings never go: NOT CHEATING FOR THE TEAM. CHEATING FOR SOMEONE.

How a mystery chapter works

  1. 1
Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
  2. 2
Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
  3. 3
One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
  4. 4
The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
