Chapter 8 of 10
The pennant does things to a town. The hardware store windows go red and white. The diner names a sandwich after the Arm. Eleven wins away, the paper counts down daily, and every countdown closes a door on the truth: no twenty-year-old tells a doctor his elbow is going while the county counts on his fingers. Ruthie and Doc Freels cross the gravel lot in step, each carrying half a secret. She speaks first; scorekeepers are brave in September. My book says someone is saving Danny's arm six pitches an inning. The doc stops. My eyes say the arm needs saving, he says, and the boy will not say so. They stand between the trucks as the grandstand lights die, and the thought arrives in both: neither has mentioned the dirt; both think of the man who waters it.

How a mystery chapter works
- 1Read the scene first.Every chapter opens with a scene from the case. The word list is drawn from it, and so is the clue.
- 2Find the words.Tap a word's first letter, then tap along to its last, or press and drag. Found words color themselves in and cross off the list.
- 3One listed word is not in the grid.Find the other nine and the word left over is the chapter's clue. Note it down, or let the case page keep it for you.
- 4The finale needs every clue. The last puzzle's word list is the clues you collected, and once you find them all, the leftover letters spell out who did it, and why.
