About The Pickle Barrel
The pickle barrel sat near the front of every old country store, a dark, fragrant crock of cucumbers swimming in salt brine and dill, fished out with a long wooden fork for a penny apiece. Beside it, a great wheel of cheddar rested under a glass dome, waiting for the storekeeper's wire to cut a wedge. Behind the counter, loops of smoked sausage and cured ham hung from the ceiling hooks, filling the whole room with a low, savory warmth that no refrigerated case has ever quite matched.
