About Forties Kitchen
When the ration book arrived, the kitchen became a place of quiet ingenuity. Housewives coaxed flavour from stockpots, stretched powdered egg into scrambled breakfasts, and turned garden gluts of marrow and parsnip into something close to comfort. The allotment was as essential as the stove, a patch of turned earth where beetroot and carrot crowded together, answering the Ministry of Food's call to Dig for Victory.
