About Silver Screen Forties
In the 1940s, cinema was the heartbeat of public life, a warm, darkened refuge where queues wound round the block whatever the weather. The great studios poured out melodrama, romance and shadow-drenched noir, and audiences came twice a week as readily as they drew breath. Stars like Bogart and Bergman, Olivier and Dietrich, became faces as familiar and beloved as old friends.
