On August 17, 1955, "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" stood as one of the best-selling singles in America, the crowning moment of a craze that had swept the country since the Disney television series lit the frontier imagination earlier that year. Fur-trimmed caps sold out in stores from coast to coast, and children everywhere hummed the tune about the "King of the Wild Frontier." The song, composed by George Bruns with lyrics by Tom Blackburn, planted a vivid picture of pioneer life, campfires, forest trails, and the echo of a flintlock rifle, deep in the American heart.
