About MTV Signs On for the First Time
At 12:01 a.m. on August 1, 1981, MTV flickered to life on American cable television, opening with a fitting salvo, "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles, and the words "Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll." The broadcast was a new kind of signal: part television channel, part radio station, part cultural lightning rod, beaming music videos into living rooms around the clock. Suddenly, a song wasn't just something you heard, it was something you watched, and the screen became as important as the stereo.
