About Classic Ballparks

Before the big modern stadiums, ballparks were squeezed into city blocks, so every one had its own odd corners, a short porch in right or a wall that came up too close. Fenway's Green Monster in left field stands about 37 feet tall, a direct result of Lansdowne Street sitting just beyond it. You'd walk through a turnstile into the smell of cigars and roasted peanuts, and find your seat on a wooden bench under a steel girder. Some of those parks are still open on summer afternoons, and some, like the Polo Grounds in Manhattan, torn down in 1964, live on only in photographs and the stories of people who sat in them.
