About The Klondike Gold Rush
In August 1896, gold turned up on Rabbit Creek, a tributary of the Klondike River, and word reached the outside world the next summer when steamers docked in Seattle and San Francisco with miners and their gold. Tens of thousands set out for Dawson, going through Skagway or nearby Dyea, over the White Pass or the steep Chilkoot, where Canadian Mounties wouldn't let anyone through without a year's worth of supplies. Dawson went from a moose pasture to a boomtown of saloons, dance halls and canvas tents, and plenty of people who came for the gold ended up making their money selling shovels and flapjacks.
