About Travel & Places
At its height, the Pullman Palace Car Company operated more sleeping cars than any railroad in America, turning an overnight journey into something close to a luxury hotel on wheels. Passengers settled into plush velvet seats as the porter made up the berths with starched white linen, dimmed the lanterns, and drew the curtains against the rushing dark. By morning, the dining car gleamed with silver and pressed tablecloths, and the landscape outside the window had quietly changed from plains to mountains — the whole country rearranging itself while you slept.
