About Travel & Places

The Great Smoky Mountains straddle the Tennessee–North Carolina border in a soft blue haze born from the trees themselves — millions of acres exhaling a natural mist that gives the range its name. In spring the slopes erupt in more wildflower species than all of northern Europe combined, and by June the synchronous fireflies of Elkmont pulse in perfect unison, drawing visitors from across the country. Old-growth hemlocks crowd the creek hollows, weathered log cabins still stand in Cades Cove, and the park has welcomed more visitors each year than any other in the national park system.
