About The Drive-In Movie
As the sun dipped below the tree line, thousands of American families would ease their cars across a gravel lot, clip a tinny speaker to the door glass, and settle in for an evening under an open sky. The drive-in theater was part movie palace, part neighborhood cookout, kids in pajamas in the back seat, a hotdog from the snack bar, and a cartoon before the feature rolled. At its peak in the late 1950s, more than four thousand drive-in screens glowed across the country on any given summer night.
