About Travel & Places
Venice rises from a shallow lagoon in the Adriatic, its streets replaced by ribbons of green-gray water and its rooftops stitched together by hundreds of arching bridges. For centuries, merchant ships laden with silk and spice glided beneath the Rialto while the Doge's palace glowed gold at the water's edge. Even today the city moves to the rhythm of oar strokes and tides, its stones warm in the afternoon light, its piazzas filling with the echo of footsteps and the distant peal of bells.
