About Go Down, Moses
Few songs carry the weight of "Go Down, Moses", a spiritual whose thundering refrain, "Let my people go," turned the story of ancient bondage in Egypt into a living prayer for freedom. Sung by enslaved people in America, it wove the sufferings of Israel under Pharaoh together with their own longing for deliverance, so that every word of the old song rang with double meaning. The image of Moses standing before the throne of Egypt, speaking for the downtrodden, became one of the most enduring in all of American song.
