About Other Pollinators
Not every pollinator wears stripes and lives in a hive. The hoverfly, with its wasp-like markings, hangs motionless above a flower before dropping in for a sip of nectar, a master of stillness in a buzzing garden. Beetles were pollinating blossoms long before honeybees arrived on the scene, drawn in by heavy perfume and the promise of a meal. Even the common wasp, so often shooed away from a summer picnic, visits hundreds of open flowers on a warm afternoon, dusting its legs with pollen at every stop.
