A lake in summer has its own unhurried rhythm, the soft creak of a dock underfoot, the silver flash of a minnow near the shallows, and a canoe rocking gently in the reeds. Dragonflies patrol the cattails while a heron stands perfectly still at the water's edge, patient as the afternoon itself. The whole world narrows to the sound of a ripple spreading outward and the warmth of the sun on your shoulders.
