About At the Easel

Consider the particular pleasure in the moment before the first stroke, the easel unfolded and locked in place, a fresh canvas glowing white under the studio light, the palette loaded with color and smelling faintly of linseed and turpentine. Everything has its spot: the taboret beside the easel, brushes fanned out by size, a worn smock hanging on the door. The studio, whether a spare bedroom or a sunlit barn, becomes its own world the moment you step inside and close the door.
