About Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was born in a one-room log cabin in Kentucky in 1809, and he taught himself to read by firelight, a self-made man long before the phrase became a cliché. He rose from splitting fence rails on the frontier to the White House, guiding the country through its bloodiest war and signing the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. The tall, stovepipe-hatted figure with the quiet prairie drawl became, for millions, the very image of American perseverance and common decency.
