About The Renaissance
The Renaissance swept across Italy in the 14th through 16th centuries and rippled outward through Europe, carrying with it a renewed delight in the human form, ancient learning, and the craft of making beautiful things. Painters ground their own pigments and stretched their vision across chapel walls; sculptors traced muscles in marble with a confidence that had not been seen since antiquity. Wealthy patrons — merchant princes and churchmen alike — competed to fill their cities with domes, loggias, and gilded altarpieces that still take the breath away.
