About Music & Film

Rhythm and blues grew from the church, the field holler, and the Saturday-night juke joint — a music that wore its heart on its sleeve and refused to be quiet. By the late 1940s the term was being used by Billboard to describe a sound that fused gospel fervor with swinging, propulsive grooves, giving the world a heartbeat it could feel in its chest before it ever reached the ear. The great voices — tenors who could shake a room, belters who could break one — built a tradition of pure, unguarded emotion that would course through every genre that followed.
