About Top of the Charts
When a song hit number one in the 1960s, the whole street seemed to know it by nightfall. Transistor radios carried the news from bedroom windows to street corners, and a fresh single climbing the Billboard Hot 100 could shift the mood of an entire week. The scratch of the needle finding the groove, the paper sleeve slid aside, for a generation of fans, that moment of first listen was as charged as any concert stage.
