Hartley's stockroom runs the building's spine, shelving to the ceiling; at its quiet end lives the paper archive: the master price list in its iron-bound binder, and sixty years of sale sheets, markdown notices and counter memos, boxed by season. Nobody comes here. Everybody's mistakes come here. Frank spends evenings there with a flashlight and a packing crate, working backward from August. He does not know what he seeks, only where clockwork gets wound: on paper, upstream, in the spring. Miles Vance finds him one night and stands in the doorway too long, and they have the conversation neither wanted: the new man asking flatly whether he is suspected, the old one answering that everyone is, and the ones who ask flatly are almost never the ones. Miles unbends an inch and starts bringing the coffee down at nine.
