The spring sale ended in May; its paperwork did not. By old store habit, a sale's markdown sheets are pulled from each counter's folder and stamped void. Mostly. The perfume counter's folder still holds the April markdown sheet, soft at the corners from a summer of consulting: the lodge's order was born during the sale and kept ringing the printed markdown, as standing orders do. Nobody decided this; that is the horror and the comedy. Peggy rang what the folder said, as trained. The folder said what April said; nobody had told the paper April was over. Frank turns the sheet under the flashlight, thirteen Thursdays explained, one thing wrong: the discount was fifteen percent, and fifteen percent of the lodge's case is twelve dollars, not forty-one. He reads the lodge's line digit by digit and stops breathing.
